And when the Civil War was fought and our country dedicated itself to a new birth of freedom, they took on the problems of an industrializing nation – fighting the crimes against society and the sins against God that they felt were being committed in our factories and in our slums. It’s that we all have it within our power to make this a better world.
Despite the temptation to view my candidacy through a purely racial lens, we won commanding victories in states with some of the whitest populations in the country. This country is more decent than one where a woman in Ohio, on the brink of retirement, finds herself one illness away
from disaster after a lifetime of hard work. But I stand before you tonight because all across America something is stirring.
